What Are Power Banks & Power Stations?
Power Bank — A smaller, portable battery with USB output used to recharge your phone and gadgets. Larger units may be sufficient to recharge or give a few extra hours of use to a small laptop.
Power Station — Similar but larger. In addition to USB outputs, it usually has AC outlets so you can power small appliances. Power stations range from a compact 12"×12"×12" box costing around $300, all the way up to suitcase-sized units that can power your whole house for several days.
How are they rated?
- Power Banks are rated in mAh (milliamp hours) at 5V USB output — how many milliamps it can deliver for 1 hour at 5V.
- Power Stations are rated in Wh (watt-hours) — a more meaningful since they run multiple voltages (12V car, USB 5–20V, and 120V AC).
- ⚠ Small power banks are only about 75% efficient — only ~75% of the rated capacity actually reaches your device.

Recharging a Laptop from a Power Station
If your laptop charges via USB-C, plug it into the station's PD (Power Delivery) port — typically labeled PD 60W or PD 100W. This is the fastest path. Any USB port works for phones, tablets, flashlights, and other small gadgets.
If your laptop uses a round plug or proprietary connector, use the original power adapter and plug it into the station's AC outlet.
Powering a Refrigerator
Medium Fridge — 12–22 cu ft
- 100–200W when running
- Brief spike on startup (<1 sec)
- 1,000–2,000 Wh/day average draw
- Need 1,500–2,500 Wh station for 24h
Large 2-Door Fridge — 22–30 cu ft
- 150–300W when running
- Large startup spike
- 2,000–4,000 Wh/day average draw
- Need 2,500–4,500 Wh station for 24h
💡 For 2 days of fridge independence, double the capacity figures above. For longer outages, supplement with foldable solar panels or a small gas generator to keep your power station charged.
Choosing & Buying a Power Station
Pick your power station based on what you want to power and for how long. Phones, tablet, and laptop only? A 288–600 Wh unit will keep you going for days. Keeping food cold? You'll need a unit sized above the fridge numbers listed above. Double capacity for every additional day.

Heating & Cooking
Hot plates, kettles, and space heaters typically draw 700–1,500W. A 1,500 Wh station will be completely drained in just 1 hour — and you risk damaging the unit or causing a fire.
🔥 Heating: Propane space heaters work outdoors but are NOT safe indoors due to carbon monoxide. Best options indoors: a fireplace, good sweater, and blankets.
🍳 Cooking: Get 2–3 filled propane tanks from Home Depot and cook on your BBQ. The simplest, most accessible option.
⭐ Best long-term cooking solution: A Coleman 2-Burner Propane Stove (~$100) connected via a BBQ tank adapter hose (~$16) to a full 3.5-gallon propane tank. The small 16 oz canisters run out fast — the large BBQ tank lasts a very long time with a Coleman stove.
Lighting
Keep USB-C rechargeable flashlights and camping lanterns on hand. Top them up from your power bank, power station, or directly from a solar panel — no wall outlet needed.
